Internships

If you are about to graduate or are a recently qualified vet – with a qualification recognised by The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or The Veterinary Council of Ireland – we are looking for a new vet to join our successful internship programme.

Our 6 month internship provides a well-structured and supported learning environment that will develop your clinical and non-clinical skills. It combines formal tutorials and practical experience and covers all aspects of poultry health and management, on a case-based approach.

You will be assigned a clinical mentor and be fully supported by the wider veterinary team, made up of some of the most respected poultry vets in the industry. You will also get the chance to spend time at practices other than your allocated base, which allows you to experience the challenges and needs of different producers, in different geographical areas.

Our Offer

  • Competitive base salary
  • 5 weeks annual leave (pro-rata), plus bank holidays
  • Allocated office PAs to organise our work load and work life
  • Enhanced company sick pay
  • Company pension scheme
  • Vehicle provided for business use
  • Employee assistance programme

About us

You will be joining the leading and largest independent poultry veterinary practice in the UK and Ireland, with 15 practice bases. We have an established team of 28 vets, field services technicians, in-house laboratories including microbiologists, as well as dispensary and office support teams.

We provide comprehensive and independent veterinary services to the broiler, layer, turkey and game bird sectors and are continually expanding due to the quality and integrity of our service, our drive to innovate and the strength of our client relationships.

Our focus is on

  • Personal, on-farm approach
  • Proactive and practical advice
  • Preventative care
  • Tailored health plans delivering the right support, at the right time, in a way that is economically balanced
  • Antibiotic reduction
  • Long-term client relationships
  • Innovation: Developing solutions to complement and improve the services we offer and flock health, welfare and performance
  • UK and international consultancy

We work with producers from across the industry including pullet rearers, commercial egg laying companies and layer farms, broiler breeders, hatcheries and broiler farms, as well as the turkey and game bird sectors.

We are at the forefront in introducing and developing the latest technology and alternative products, continuously running a number of trials to find the best solutions to today’s, and tomorrow’s, challenges for modern poultry production.

Our teams are on site, working together with farmers, to provide the best possible management of the birds under our care. Our focus is on improving their health, welfare and performance, underpinned by proactive flock management and tailored health plans.

To support the work we do, we also have a number of complementary, associated businesses including:

  • ABC: Solutions to control the use of antibiotics in animal production
  • FarmWater: Water sanitisation products and services
  • Poultry Pharm: No-prescription product range
  • The Chicken Vet: An online service for domestic owners and veterinary advice for associated practices

Why commercial poultry?

Commercial poultry production in the UK has grown significantly in last decade and relies on considerable veterinary involvement. The industry involves complex management, and therefore veterinary support is required in a diverse range of areas.

St David’s Poultry vet Charlotte Cole, National Egg & Poultry Awards, Young Farm Vet of the Year 2022, joined us through our internship after graduating from The University of Liverpool. Charlotte’s internship was based out of our head office in Exeter, while also travelling around the country to gain experience from different regions.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time during the internship. Travelling to different branches allowed me to interact with the wider team, see different workloads and experience different clinical approaches. I had practical on-farm training, which covered all aspects of poultry

and game, and a combination of tutorials. After 6 months I was visiting clients alone, but I knew that there was always support at the other end of the phone from the colleagues I had worked with throughout my internship”

Charlotte has now been with our veterinary team for a number of years and has become a 2025 Nuffield Scholar, where she will be exploring the interaction between the pullet environment and the outcomes in laying hens in various countries.

How to apply

If you would like to apply for our internship, please send your CV to hr@stdavids-vets.co.uk

Following this, if we’d like to progress your application, you’ll have the opportunity to have an informal conversation with one of the team so you can find out more about the role and St David’s Poultry Team. A more formal interview, normally with of our Directors, would follow.
