BVetMed MRCVS

Tom is part of our West of England and Wales team.

Tom says:

“Ever since I was young, I’d paint or sculpt animals, and I also had an aptitude for biology. As I grew up, I combined my interest in animals and the science-led side, and knew that veterinary medicine was for me, going on to complete my degree at the Royal Veterinary College.

My interest in poultry really developed as part of my work experience at a layer farm, during my degree.  It spurred me to take a closer look at the industry, that drove me to apply for a placement at St David’s Poultry team. During the that placement I really got to understand the positive, long-term relationships that this teams’ vets have with producers, versus the other sectors that I’d experienced, and was keen to be a part of.

It was also clear that a proactive approach to poultry health is at the heart of the St David’s approach, as well as continuing to drive innovation, that supports better bird health, welfare and performance.

Although the whole industry fascinates me, I’m particularly interested in parasite control, as this can have a significant impact on all three of these areas. I find red mite particularly intriguing, with its resilience to many of the products available to combat it. Together with heterakis gallinarum (caecal worm), the cost/benefit analysis of different approaches – both preventative and reactive – is a focus for me. And of course, looking at the return on investment across the board when considering options for clients, whatever the scenario, is key.”
