Nico Van Niekerk

I grew up on a citrus and pecan farm in Hartswater, Northern Cape, South Africa, where I developed an interest in farming and animal production. While studying veterinary medicine at the University of Pretoria, I discovered a particular interest in poultry medicine.

After graduating, I completed a year of compulsory service with the South African government before undertaking a poultry mentorship course and joining C4 Africa. Over the following three and a half years, I gained experience in poultry medicine, developing an interest in the variety of production systems and the business and financial aspects of the industry.

Having worked across poultry production, I enjoy the variety of working with breeders, hatcheries, broilers, layers, turkeys and game birds. I’m particularly interested in the balance between animal health and the commercial realities of an industry where margins can be tight.

I enjoy working closely with clients on site, seeing first-hand where practical adjustments can be made to improve flock performance and productivity. I value the opportunity to combine my veterinary knowledge with an understanding of the commercial realities of poultry production, helping clients identify improvements that benefit both flock health and business performance.

Outside of veterinary medicine, I enjoy spending time outdoors, particularly hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and birdwatching, having recorded 425 bird species. I am also a passionate rugby fan, and I support the Springboks.

Over the past few years, my wife and I have developed a passion for long-distance running, progressing from our first 5km to ultramarathons. We have completed the Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 2025 and 2026, earning back-to-back medals, and in July 2025, I travelled to Tanzania to summit Mount Kilimanjaro after a six-day hike. I have travelled across Africa, visiting 13 different countries, and I look forward to exploring more of the UK.
