Disease Update 23rd November 2016 – Avian Influenza in Europe

Report provided by The British Poultry Council.

The AI situation across Europe has quietened down a little since last week but on the 24th, Sweden confirmed HPAI H5N8 in a wild bird.  Germany has reported LPAI H5N2in backyard flocks.

Confirmed Countries: Austria,  Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Russian Federation, Switzerland and Iran.

Birds Affected:
Domestic Bird Species Affected: Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), Duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus), Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo).
Wild Bird Species Affected: Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), Gull (Laridae), Common Coot (Fulica atra), wild duck (AythyinaeorAnatinae sp.), stork (Ciconiidae sp.), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), Great Cested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Painted Stork (Mycteria leucocephala), pelican (Pelecanus sp.), munia (Lonchura sp.), crow (Corvus sp.), Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

Defra is considering our request for a housing order and we hope to have an update in the next day or two.  The Scottish Government is also seriously considering the request but the CVO needs more assurances around welfare and how the industry will step up biosecurity if birds were to be housed.
