Victor says:
“I spent the early part of my veterinary career working with farm animals, which progressed to working for a technology company that used sensor technology to remote monitor dairy livestock.
During my time working with farm animals, I worked with the St David’s Poultry Team on a number of projects. I got to see first-hand the work they do in the poultry industry and jumped at the chance to work with the team and within the sector when the opportunity arose.Working in commercial poultry means I’m able to combine my two main work interests – technology and improving the welfare of production animals. For example, there’s currently a focus on how we balance the increase in demand for meat and egg production, whilst striving to achieve ever higher standards of animal health and welfare. Broiler production, in particular is an area I’m seeing reap the benefits of using technology to achieve this.
Other areas that I’m seeing producers adopt technology range from molecular diagnostics to investing in more efficient processing tools – which is driving efficiencies and encouraging further innovation across the industry. I’m also undertaking research that looks at how the industry can use data analysis techniques – for example machine learning – and apply these to improve broiler production and improve game disease detection.
A risk factor that we’re all working hard to mitigate, is the potential increase in the number of notifiable diseases and the impact this could cause the industry. Therefore, another focus of mine is working with clients to put in place proactive health plans, that incorporate many aspects of a bird’s environment too, such as biosecurity and clean water. That way we’ll continue to see a reduction in the need to use antibiotics.”
