“During my studies and training at University, I’d was always attracted to livestock farming, first working with dairy cattle in Vienna. I was keen to move to the UK and the varied nature of the poultry industry really attracted me. It was the best decision I’ve made career-wise and I can’t imagine moving away from the sector.
I also liked the fact that St David’s cover a large part of the UK. I get to be part of a team of experts that continues to grow. As the sector evolves, it also gives me the opportunity to continue to learn and develop my knowledge too.
I’m particularly interested in hatcheries, broilers and breeders although having worked in the industry for many years, I also have significant knowledge on the layer and gamebird side too, having previously been located in areas of the country where there’s a concentration of these clients.
A big change for the industry over recent years has been the use of antibiotics. Whereas many of my clients would use them for the treatment of even minor problems – this is very much not the case now – with far more of a focus on proactive versus reactive management.
As a vet, my motto is to be proactive, to prevent disease and keep livestock healthy. My focus is very much to work with clients to make sure they have the health programmes in place, that includes having the right vaccinations, biosecurity programme, management on site and the right use of supplements during the lifecycle of a crop. This way, not only do you promote the health and welfare of your livestock, but it results in the reduction of antibiotic use, which should be a major focus of all producers.”
