Barry, another Glasgow University graduate joined St David's from Aviagen in September 2008. After graduating Barry worked in general practice and then spent a year at Glasgow Veterinary School where one of the students he taught was Mike Alcorn. He completed a PhD at Edinburgh Vet School focusing on bone development in poultry and then spent 4 years as a lecturer at the veterinary school in Melbourne, Australia. Whilst in Australia he completed an avian pathology course and was also funded by the Australian poultry industry to investigate bone disorders. Barry on his return to Scotland headed a research group at the Roslin Institute investigating lameness and bone disorders in poultry for 7 years. He has extensive global experience of broiler breeder, broiler management and disease control.

His experience with Aviagen ranged from being a company veterinarian to a director. Whilst at Aviagen he had extensive practical and management responsibilities, from assisting customers throughout the world including the Middle East and Europe on health issues; biosecurity and disease control planning, to setting up and contributing to research projects on poultry diseases such as dysbacteriosis, pododermatitis, broiler lameness and clubbed down. Barry is a reviewer of articles for Avian Pathology and other journals and has contributed chapters to books including the recent edition of 'Poultry Diseases' where Mike also has a chapter.

It is therefore, very appropriate that Barry, with both his practical and academic background should head up our Scottish branch 'St David's Poultry Team at the Dick Vet' This offers us and our clients the opportunity to be more directly involved in the detailed investigation of poultry health issues and to contribute to teaching of poultry medicine within a veterinary school. The St David's Team are currently assisting in providing specialist electives to train future poultry veterinarians.

Since joining St David's Poultry Team Barry has been enjoying rapidly getting up to speed with the health issues in layers and game birds and is looking forward to developing our customer base in Scotland and the North of England.
